Abstract

The development of the Large-Scale Marine Protected Area (LSMPA) in the Banda Sea requires the active involvement of small-scale fishing communities whose livelihoods depend on the surrounding waters. This community service activity was carried out in Pasir Putih Village, South Buru Regency, through a participatory Focus Group Discussion (FGD) involving 35 fishermen, combining education on LSMPA concepts with participatory mapping of fishing grounds. The results show that most participants are experienced fishermen aged 45–59 who face declining catches, weather-related constraints, and highly variable fishing seasons (80% of respondents), while only 40% belong to a fishermen's group. Notably, 68.6% of respondents identified marine tourism potential in their fishing grounds, including sightings of whales, rays, dolphins, moray eels, and marlin. The activity successfully raised participants' awareness of LSMPA planning and produced field-based data to support inclusive zonation. These findings underline the importance of continuous community education and institutional strengthening to support sustainable co-management of the Banda Sea LSMPA.
