Abstract

Cultural introduction can complement foreign language learning by helping students understand the cultural context associated with the language they study. This community service program was designed to introduce Japanese culture to students of SMAS Pondok Pesantren Modern Nurul Ikhlas X Koto through creative and interactive art-based activities. A total of 22 eleventh-grade students participated in the program, which employed a workshop model combining material delivery with direct practical experience. The cultural topics presented included kimono, sadou, Tanabata, and shodō. The learning process utilized PowerPoint presentations and videos, followed by discussions, question-and-answer sessions, and shodō practice. During the practical activity, students were guided in using brushes and ink and in applying basic kanji writing techniques on hanshi paper. Students were also allowed to select a kanji character and practice writing it step by step with assistance from the facilitators. The implementation of the program indicated that the students were able to engage well with both the learning materials and the practical activities. They participated in discussions and responded to questions following the presentation. The activity also provided students with first-hand experience of Japanese culture, particularly through shodō practice. These results suggest that art-based activities can serve as an alternative medium for introducing Japanese culture through a learning experience that encourages active participation rather than relying solely on theoretical explanation.
