Abstract

The use of ionizing radiation in diagnostic radiographic examinations poses biological risks, particularly among vulnerable groups such as pediatric patients and women of reproductive age. Therefore, the implementation of radiation safety and protection standards is an essential aspect of radiological services. This study aimed to evaluate the implementation of radiation safety protection standards in the conventional radiography examination room of the Radiology Installation at RSKD Ibu dan Anak Pertiwi. This study employed a qualitative descriptive design involving three radiographers as key informants selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through checklist-based observations, in-depth interviews, exploratory questionnaires as supporting data, and document reviews. Data analysis was performed using source and technique triangulation. The findings revealed a gap between the implementation of radiation protection practices in the field and the requirements stipulated in BAPETEN Regulation No. 4 of 2020. The main discrepancies were identified in the limited availability of specific Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including thyroid shields, gonadal shields, lead glasses, and lead gloves, although individual dose monitoring using TLD badges had been implemented. The available lead aprons also require specification verification because they were recorded as having a thickness of 0.2 mm Pb, whereas the recommended minimum standard is 0.25 mm Pb. The physical shielding of the examination room had met the applicable technical requirements. This study concludes that the provision of standardized PPE and the improvement of radiation protection competencies through regular training are necessary to support the implementation of the radiation optimization principle of As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA).
