Overview of Nurses’ Roles in Meeting Christian Spiritual Needs in the Inpatient and Outpatient Units of Santa Elisabeth Hospital Medan in 2026

Meeting patients’ spiritual needs is an essential component of holistic nursing care because it may help patients obtain peace, hope, and strength in coping with illness. Nurses play an important role in addressing patients’ spiritual needs through support, therapeutic communication, and patient-centered care. This study aimed to describe the role of nurses in fulfilling patients’ spiritual needs at Santa Elisabeth Hospital Medan in 2026. A descriptive quantitative design was employed. The study population consisted of nurses working in the inpatient wards and outpatient clinics of Santa Elisabeth Hospital Medan, with a total sample of 75 respondents selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data were collected using a questionnaire and analyzed using univariate analysis presented as frequency distributions and percentages. The results showed that the majority of respondents were aged 26–30 years (64 respondents; 85.3%) and had 1–6 years of work experience (47 respondents; 62.7%). The role of nurses in fulfilling patients’ spiritual needs in the inpatient wards and outpatient clinics was categorized as good among all respondents (75 respondents; 100.0%). It can be concluded that nurses at Santa Elisabeth Hospital Medan have performed their role effectively in fulfilling patients’ spiritual needs. The hospital is expected to maintain and enhance spiritual care services as an integral component of holistic nursing practice.
